I Got Beats in these Fingertips
Elaine L. Jacob Gallery
Dates: July 12 through September 20, 2024
The Elaine L. Jacob Gallery, Wayne State University (WSU) proposers a multimedia exhibition highlighting the legacy of J Dilla and the regional folkways of Detroit and Houston hip-hop to coincide with the J Dilla Music Tech Teaching Workshop hosted by the CFPCA, WSU.
Works by local and national fine artists, performance artists, and musicians will be included in the exhibition, along with objects on loan from museums and collectors. The exhibition contents include fine art, video, ephemera, and sound installations to document and explore the visual culture and music technologies of regional hip-hop. The two floors of the gallery will look at the distinctions and overlooked similarities between the Detroit and Houston hip-hop scenes leading up to and coinciding with the era of two pioneering producers J Dilla (Detroit) and DJ Screw (Houston) which defined their respective regional sounds.
Extended programming throughout the duration of the exhibition will include the following: readings, performances, lectures/panels, screenings, and gallery talks – all major components to the exhibition concept.
