Much of Lillien Waller’s poetry explores the impact of social and historical forces on the intimate spheres of family life, particularly in her native Detroit. In 2011, she edited the anthology American Ghost: Poets on Life After Industry, examining the influence of deindustrialization on community, culture, personal identity and the environment. Recent poems and essays are concerned with the interplay of visual art, aesthetics and the materiality of language. In 2019, she exhibited the poem/installation, “One Practice” in Parallel Visions (Wasserman Projects, Detroit), a multidisciplinary group show celebrating ten years of Kresge Arts in Detroit.

Lillien received a bachelor’s degree in English from University of Michigan and an MFA in writing from Sarah Lawrence College. She also holds degrees from New School for Social Research and Emory University. Her poems have been nominated for the Pushcart Prize and Best New Poets and have been supported by the Cave Canem Foundation (2001) and a Kresge Fellowship in the Literary Arts (2015).
